Five get life term in murder case in Naogaon

NAOGAON, Feb 6, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced five persons to life term imprisonment in a murder case in Mahadevpur upazila of the district in 2007.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Ferdous Wahid pronounced the verdict this afternoon.

The court also fined Taka 50,000 each of them, in default, to suffer six months more in jail. 

The convicts were Shahidul Islam, 50, son of Tashir Uddin, his two brothers Abul kalam Azad, 55, and Abdus Salam, 60, Abdus Salam's son Ashraf, 40, residents of Raigaon village in Mahadevpur upazila and Ibrahim Hossain, 60, son of Subid Sonar of Atura village of the upazila.

The court acquitted 11 persons as the charges brought against them were not proved, said public prosecutor Saikat Ilias Kabir.

According to prosecution, on April 24, 2007, the convicts led by Shahidul and Abdus Salam attacked Fazlur Rahman with local weapons and beat him to death over a land dispute at Raigaon village of Mahadevpur upazila.

On the same day, Fazlur Rahman's wife Shahnaz Begum filed a murder case with Mahadevpur Police Station.

Investigation officer of the case filed a charge-sheet against 17 people to the court on July 24, 2008. Later, CID investigated and filed a charge-sheet against 19 people to the court.

Three of the accused died during the hearing of the case. As a result, the trial of the case against 16 accused was underway. 

The judge after examining 22 witnesses and evidence found them guilty and announced the judgment.
