Potato cultivation exceeds target in Munshiganj: DAE

MUNSHIGANJ, Feb 6, 2025 (BSS) – Farmers have already exceeded the potato cultivation target in the district by 403 hectares to 34758 from 34,355 hectares last year expecting a record production of this kitchen vegetable.

“The potato growers have made a record potato cultivation in the district as 34758 hectares of land have been brought under potato farming,” said deputy director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), Munshiganj Biplob Kumar Mohanto.

Of the cultivated land, potato has been cultivated on 9,610 hectares of land in Munshiganj sadar, 9,094 hectares land in Tongibari, 1,950 hectares of land in Srinagar, 8,985 hectares of land in Sirajdikhan, 3,115 hectares of land in Louhajong and 2,004 hectares of land in Gazaria.

The potato production target that has been fixed over 10, 45,000 tonnes is expected to exceed this season. 

In last year, potatoes were cultivated on 34,355 hectares of land and the yield was around 12 lakh tonnes.

Now the weather condition is favorable for potato cultivation and surplus amount of potato is likely to be produced if everything goes well, DAE official added.

Potato is one of the main food crops in Bangladesh after rice and wheat. The country is producing on average 10 million MT potatoes over the last few years.
