Dr. Kathak Das placed on 2 day remand in sedition case

CHATTOGRAM, Feb 6, 2025 (BSS) - A Chattogram court today placed Dr. Kathak Das on two-day remand in sedition case filed with city's Kotwali thana on October 31 last year against 19 people.

The court of Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Sarkar Hasan Shahriar granted two-day remand for interrogation after investigation officer of the case produced him before the court with a 10-day remand prayer, Md Raihanul Wazed Chowdhury, Assistant Public Prosecutor of the court said.

The sedition case was filed against 19 people including Chandan Kumar Dhar alias Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari and Dr Kotok Das on the charge of disrespecting the national flag at the 'Swadhinata Stambha' at city’s New Market intersection area on October 31.

According to the statement of the case, a group of youths reportedly installed a saffron-coloured flag over the Bangladeshi flag on the Independence Pillar at Zero Point, in city’s New Market Junction during a rally organized by the Hindu community under the banner "Sanatan Jagaran Mancha" on October 25 in 2024.

Feroz Khan, a resident of city’s Mohra area under Chandgaon thana filed the case with Kotwali thana in the city.

Earlier, Dr. Kathak Das was detained by the immigration police while trying to travel to the UK via Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Wednesday night. 

He was later handed over to Chattogam Metropolitan Police. 

Dr. Kathak Das is an ophthalmologist. He is a phaco surgeon at Lions Charity Eye Hospital and a consultant at Bangladesh Eye Hospital.
