RAJSHAHI, Feb 26, 2025 (BSS)- A month-long campaign to remove spike, locally known as perek, from trees has been launched aimed at establishing an eco-friendly atmosphere through protecting trees in the district.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Tuktuk Talukder opened the campaign at Collectorate building premises here today.

Divisional Forest Officer Rafiquzzaman Shah, Associate Professor Dr Montaj Ali Sarker from the Department of Botany at Rajshahi University (RU) and BRAC Bank Manager Dulal Mian were present, among others, on the occasion.

Sharing his expertise on the issue, Dr Montaj Ali said trees supply oxygen and consume carbon dioxide from the environment. But, ironically, people insert perek on three's due to their ignorance about the multifarious benefits of trees which is very pathetic.

He said only government and non-government organisations and students are not sufficient to remove perek from trees but concerted efforts have become crucial to make the programme a total success.

Apart from the month-long campaign, generating awareness among the public in general is very vital on the issue.
