Teesta char area inspected for construction site of Chinese-funded hospital

RANGPUR, April 15, 2025 (BSS) - Two high-ranking officials assigned to the hospital construction project today inspected char areas along the banks of the river Teesta in Gangachara upazila here aiming to select the probable site for construction of a proposed Chinese-funded hospital.

Two high-ranking officials assigned to the hospital construction project are Dr. Shahidur Rahman Khandker 
Lead Economist, World Bank, Washington and Farhad Ahmed, 
former Senior Transport Economist, World Bank, Washington.

The two offiials with Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rabiul Faisal and Gangachara Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mahmud Hasan Mridha visited the Char Kalagachhi area of Mohipur Mouza in Laksmitari union of Gangachara upazila.

Chairman of local Laksmitari union parishad Abdullah Al Hadi and common people of the area also companied the visiting high officials in the afternoon.

The officials inspected 20 acres of land for construction of the proposed hospital out of 100 acres of Khas land available there in Char Kalagachhi area for the purpose.

After today's primary inspection, the  authorities concerned will conduct an on-site inspection and determine the best site for construction of the 1000-bed modern hospital with international standards.

Talking to BSS tonight, Gangachara UNO Mahmud Hasan Mridha said that the authorities concerned are inspecting various areas along the river Teesta for construction of the proposed Chinese-funded friendship hospital.

“In this context, the Chinese delegation is expected to visit a char area of Gangachara upazila. A modern hospital in Gangachara will benefit a large number of people in North Bengal, including people in areas affected by river erosion and floods,” the UNO said.

Imran Ahmed, convener of the Rangpur District Committee of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, said that the day India stopped medical visas, the door to new possibilities opened for Bangladeshis in the medical field.

“To make this possibility a success, the Chinese authorities have taken a plan to build a world-class 1,000-bed hospital with all modern facilities in Rangpur division,” he said.

Considering its geographical location and divisional headquarters, the issue of setting up this hospital in Rangpur district has now become a demand of the mass people, he added.

It may be mentioned here that China will build a 1,000-bed modern specialized hospital in Rangpur division as part of major infrastructural development in the health sector of Bangladesh.

The country is gifting this hospital to the people of Bangladesh on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of China-Bangladesh diplomatic relations.

Earlier on April 13, adviser to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Nurjahan Begum at a press conference held at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital informed that the hospital will be built near the proposed Teesta Master Plan project area.

The information created huge enthusiasm among the people from all walks of life in Rangpur division.
