4 killed, 13 injured in truck-pickup collision in Habiganj

HABIGANJ, April 18, 2025 (BSS) - Four people were killed and 13 others injured in a head-on collision between a truck and a pickup in Madhabpur on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway here in the early hours of today.

The deceased were identified as Mostakima Akhter, 35, wife of Ismail Mia of Chamakpur village in Baniachong upazila of the district, her brother Hafizur Rahman, 26, Ayesha Akhter, 30, wife of Jamal Mia of Raiyapur village in Nabiganj, and Rahim Mia, 22, a helper of the pickup and son of Malek Mia of Pongshipur village in Sirajdikhan upazila of Munshiganj district.

Abdullah Al Mamun, officer-in-charge (OC) of Madhabpur Police Station, said the four people died on the spot when a Dhaka-bound truck (Chatt Metro T-11-6331) collided head-on with a pickup (Dhaka Metro Na-19-8791) coming from the opposite direction at Bakharnagar in the upazila around 2:00am today.

"Among the victims, two were men and two women," he said, adding that the injured were rescued and sent to Habiganj Sadar Hospital, while the condition of five of them is critical.

There were 17 passengers in the pickup, along with household goods, Mamun continued.

"The 13 seriously injured people were admitted to the Habiganj District Sadar Hospital while two children in critical condition were sent to Dhaka for advanced treatment. The bodies have been recovered and kept at Habiganj Sadar Hospital," the OC said.

The ill-fated vehicles have been seized by the Highway Police, he added.
