CHATTOGRAM, April 19, 2025 (BSS)- The re-excavation of Birjakhal, one of Chattogram city's most significant canals, began today as part of a major initiative to address the city's persistent waterlogging problems.

Chattogram city unit of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has taken the initiative.

To mark the inaugural ceremony, a public meeting was held on Saturday morning at the grounds of Aschi Mia Dost Bhaban in the Ishaqer Pul area of Bakalia. 

The event was presided over by City Jamaat Ameer and former parliament member Alhaj Shahjahan Chowdhury, with Chattogram City Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain attending as the chief guest.

In his address, Mayor Dr. Hossain said, "Since assuming office, I have strongly believed that resolving waterlogging requires a collective effort. Chattogram is not owned by any single group, it belongs to all of us.I commend Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami for taking this initiative to alleviate waterlogging."
 
CDA Chairman Engineer Md. Nourul Karim, City Corporation Chief Executive Officer Sheikh Muhammad Touhidul Islam, Chief Cleaning Officer Commander IUA Chowdhury, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Central Majlish-e-Shura members and city Nayebe Ameer Dr. AJM Obaidullah and Muhammad Nazrul Islam, Jammat Secretary Principal Muhammad Nurul Amin, Engineer Manjare Khorshed, Engineer Mominul Haque, Assistant Secretaries Muhammad Ullah and Faisal Muhammad Yunus and Organizing Secretary Principal Shamsuzzaman Helali among others, addressed the function.
 
Following the meeting, Mayor Dr. Hossain officially inaugurated the canal excavation and cleaning activities.

Senior officials from the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) and CDA, along with leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and local residents, were present at the ceremony.

CCC senior officials and CDA officials, leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and people from all walks of life of Baklia area were present on the occasion. 

The initiative has generated widespread enthusiasm in the Bakalia area, with hopes high for significant improvement in the city's water management.
