SYLHET, April 29, 2025 (BSS) - Farmers in the haor areas of Sylhet are busy harvesting Boro paddy despite adverse weather conditions, with 85 percent of the harvest already completed in the four districts of the region.

Bimal Chandra Som, Additional Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), Sylhet, said that along with the haor areas, paddy harvesting in the highlands is also in full swing, and so far, 33 percent of the crop has been harvested there.

Over five lakh workers are engaged in paddy harvesting daily in the agricultural region. He added that despite the unfavorable weather, farmers are able to carry out the harvest smoothly with the help of combined harvester machines.

According to DAE sources, 1,850 combined harvesters are currently in operation in the Sylhet agricultural region. With one machine, it is possible to harvest 7 to 8 hectares of paddy in a single day.

This year, Boro paddy has been cultivated on 276,803 hectares of land in the haor areas and on 220,416 hectares in the plain land of Sylhet division.

The DAE hopes that if the weather remains favorable, farmers will be able to complete the harvest by May 5.
