KHULNA, June 24, 2025 (BSS) - Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Administrator Md. Firoz Sarkar today said human trafficking is a criminal and heinous act, and those involved in such crimes must be brought to exemplary punishment.
Lack of awareness is a major reason for people becoming victim of trafficking, he said, laying emphasis on increasing awareness to reduce such act in the society.
He made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony of the psychosocial counseling corner held at the Urban Health Building on Sher-e-Bangla Road in the city.
The event was organized under the 'Ashshash' project, supported by Khulna City Corporation and implemented by the NGOs Winrock International and Caritas Bangladesh.
The 'Ashshash' project is a four-year initiative implemented by Winrock International in ten districts of Bangladesh with the support of the Embassy of Switzerland in Bangladesh.
In the Khulna region, the project is being implemented by Caritas Bangladesh. The main objective of the project is to ensure the social and economic reintegration of women and men who have survived trafficking.
Through this project, survivors of human trafficking are provided with psychosocial counseling, healthcare, medical treatment, legal support, skill development, and employment opportunities to help them become self-reliant.
To implement these activities, a psychosocial counseling corner has been established on the second floor of the Urban Health Building. KCC Administrator Md. Firoz Sarkar inaugurated the corner by cutting a ribbon and unveiling a plaque.
At the inaugural event, the KCC Administrator welcomed this humanitarian initiative and emphasized the importance of raising awareness among underprivileged communities to prevent human trafficking.
KCC’s Chief Executive Officer Laskar Tajul Islam presided over the event while its Secretary Sharif Asif Rahman and Civil Surgeon Dr. Mosammat Mahfuza Khatun, addressed as special guests.
Winrock International’s Country Representative and Project Director Dipta Rakhshit delivered the welcome speech.
Sheikh Nazmul Islam, Senior Manager of the Ashash project, presented an overview of the counseling corner, and Project Manager Probash Chandra Biswas delivered a speech of goodwill.
Later, Administrator Md. Firoz Sarkar visited the medical services being provided at Khulna City Corporation run at Khalishpur Red Hospital.
