Swechasebak League leader arrested in murder cases in Rangpur

RANGPUR, July 13, 2025 (BSS) - Police have arrested Awami Swechasebak League leader Iftekharul Islam Shuvo, 35, in four attempted murder cases filed following the anti-discrimination student movement. 

Earlier, he was arrested from the city's CO Bazar area on Saturday night based on a secret tip-off.  

Rangpur Kotwali Metropolitan Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Ataur Rahman confirmed the matter to BSS today. 

Iftekharul Islam Shuvo is the organizing secretary of the Rangpur Metropolitan Awami Swechasebak League. He is the son of Ashraful Islam of Mahiganj Dhumkhatia area of Rangpur metropolis. 

Shuvo had been in hiding to avoid arrest after the fall of the Awami League regime in the July-August 2024 mass uprising. 

“He has been arrested in four such cases filed by injured Mamunur Rashid Mamun, injured Joynal Abedin Bappi, injured Ramzan Ali and injured Shahidul Islam against him at the Rangpur Metropolitan Kotwali police station,” the OC added.
