RANGPUR, Aug 18, 2025 (BSS) - Experts and officials today emphasized increasing public awareness to conserve the country's fisheries resources and expand fish farming to boost production.
The Department of Fisheries and district administration jointly organized the event at Shilpakala Academy auditorium to launch National Fisheries Week 2025.
Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rabiul Faisal, chief guest at the event presided over by District Fisheries Officer Md Harun-or-Rashid.
Superintendent of Police Md Abu Saim and District Livestock Officer Dr Md Abu Sayeed spoke as special guests.
Assistant Director of Rangpur District Fisheries Department Sanjay Banerjee presented a documentary outlining government steps to enhance fish production and highlighted successes so far.
The deputy commissioner said fish is a major source of protein in Bengali cuisine and crucial for family prosperity and national economic development. He highlighted that many farmers are adopting modern techniques to increase production and create employment for unemployed youth.
He added that the government provides training, loans, and technical support to fish farmers. He also stressed bringing all rivers, canals, ponds, beels, and floodplains under fish cultivation to maximize production.
District Fisheries Officer Md Harun-or-Rashid said the nationwide Fisheries Week aims to raise awareness and boost production. He called for establishing cooperative organizations of real fish farmers to address challenges in the sector.
Earlier, a colorful rally began from the District Collectorate, circled the main roads, and ended at Shilpakala Academy following the release of fish fry in the Rangpur Cricket Garden pond.
Three successful fish farmers were later awarded.
