PATUAKHALI, Aug 11, 2025 (BSS) - Farmers of the coastal district are happy with a bumper vegetable yield and market prices during the ongoing season.
Many vegetable farmers have already regained financial solvency in vegetable cultivation. Bumper yield of vegetables brought the smile of the cultivator faces in the district.
Vegetable cultivation has increased in various places in the char areas of the district including Bauphal, Galachipa, Dashmina, Dumki, Mirzaganj, Kalapara and Rangabali upazilas.
Farmers cultivated vegetables include perennial hybrid brinjal, ladies finger, puishak, patol, gourd, sweet pumpkin, raw banana, papaya, tomato, carrot and other vegetables on their lands.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) this year, farmers cultivated vegetables on 180 hectares of land in Sadar upazila, 250 hectares in Bauphal upazila, 380 hectares in Galachipa, 350 hectares in Kalapara, 165 hectares in Dasmina, 150 hectares in Mirzaganj, 75 hectares in Dumki and 120 hectares in Rangabali upazila of the district.
In addition, (separately) raw bananas were cultivated on 107 hectares of land in the district.
A total of 30,060 metric tonnes of vegetables were produced in the district during the season.
Mohiuddin Ahmed, 30, a farmer of Patarpol village under Baga union in Bauphal upazila, said that he cultivated sweet pumpkin, puishak, raw banana, papaya, jhinga and brinjal on 50 decimal of land spending Taka 50,000 this year.
Now he is expecting to earn Taka one lakh selling his vegetables.
Local farmers said that with the cooperation and advice of the DAE, different types of vegetables are being cultivated in the district.
It has been seen in various markets that sweet pumpkins are being sold at prices ranging from Taka 50-80 for small size, Taka 80-120 for medium size and Taka 150-500 for large size.
Raw pumpkins are being sold at Taka 30-40, brinjal at Taka 70-80, potato at Taka 40-50 tomato at Taka 50-60 per kg and other vegetables are also being sold at good prices.
Besides, vegetable wholesalers are purchasing from local markets and supplying them to different parts of the country including Dhaka.
Bauphal Upazila Agriculture Officer Md. Milon told BSS that summer vegetables were cultivated slightly less in Bauphal compared to last year due to floods and rains.
However, the farmers are smiling as the market is good this year compared to previous.
Additional Director of the DAE Md. Shahadat Hossain told BSS, "This year, vegetables have been cultivated on 1,670 hectares of land in the district. And the production has been 30,060 metric tons.
Various vegetable seeds and fertilizers have been distributed among small and marginal farmers. Besides, agriculture officers provided cooperation and advice to the farmers.
