PATUAKHALI, Aug 17, 2025 (BSS) - Aman paddy cultivation is going on in full swing across all 11 unions of Kuakata upazila, with farmers showing greater enthusiasm this season, officials of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) said.
Favorable weather and adequate rainfall have enabled farmers to prepare their fields in time and plant seedlings without facing irrigation problems.
Compared to previous years, interest in Aman cultivation has significantly increased among farmers, the officials added.
Kalapara Upazila Agriculture Office sources said, Aman will be cultivated on 30,830 hectares of land in 11 unions and two municipalities this year. Seedling transplantation has already been completed on 18,500 hectares and is expected to be finished shortly.
During field visits, it was found that some farmers are ploughing land with tractors, some are engaged in weeding, while others are transplanting seedlings.
Farmers are mostly cultivating Brri Dhan-49, Brri Dhan-51, Brri Dhan-52, and several hybrid varieties alongside local white thick and cumin nut varieties instead of traditional Desi rice.
Abdul Jalil, a farmer from Nayapara village of Latachapoli union, said, "Since the weather is favorable, we are busy planting Aman saplings. Everyone is leaning towards Aman cultivation due to its good production. The rains have also been good this year, so we did not have to worry about irrigation."
Visiting several areas of the upazila, farmers were seen transplanting seedlings in rain-fed fields, where the plants are growing well.
Kalapara Upazila Agricultural Extension Officer Md. Nahid Hasan said farmers are being encouraged to bring highland areas, which usually remain fallow during the monsoon, under Aman cultivation.
If the weather is favorable, farmers are expecting a bumper production of Aman paddy.
