Over 8 tonnes of polythene seized in Khulna

KHULNA, Aug 24, 2025 (BSS) - A joint team of the Navy and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) seized over eight tonnes of illegal polythene during a drive in Khan Jahan Ali Hawkers' Market in the city on Saturday.

Three business establishments were fined and another one was sealed during the operation, official sources said.

The forces, led by the Department of Environment's Executive Magistrate Momtaz Begum, conducted the seven-hour drive beginning at 11 am.

A total of 4.46 tonnes of polythene were recovered from Gautam Store, Uttam Store, and Tulip Store. The three businesses were fined Taka 70,000 in total. Another 3.62 tonnes of polythene were seized from Roni Store, which was sealed after its owner could not be located.

Executive Magistrate Momtaz Begum said, "This is one of the largest operations ever conducted in this market." She also stressed that such drives against environmentally harmful polythene would continue.
