Speakers call for conservation of local fish varieties

KHULNA, Aug 24, 2025 (BSS)- Speakers at a meeting here today called for protecting local varieties of fishes saying native species are part of our heritage and culture.

They said this at the closing ceremony of the National Fisheries Week here today.

Khulna District Fisheries Office organized the event at the conference room of the Divisional Fisheries Office with Director Fisheries Zahangir Alam in Khulna Division addressed as the chief guest.

They said every year 70 to 80 percent of shrimp are exported from the Khulna region, and the country’s southern region is fertile lands for fish farming and plays a crucial role in the country’s economy.

Activities of sanctuaries must be expedited to enhance native fish production, they said.

Chaired by District Fisheries Officer Badruzzaman the function was addressed, among others by Deputy Director of the Directorate of Fisheries Division Bipul Kumar Basak, Quality Assurance Manager Zahidul Hasan and fish farm owner Sheikh Rezanul Islam.

A T M Towfiq Mahmud, Senior Assistant Director of the District Fisheries Office presented an evaluation paper regarding a seven-day program of Fisheries Week.
