RAJSHAHI, Aug 24, 2025 (BSS)- Instead of only promoting commercial fish farming, emphasis should be given on motivating the farmers towards farming nature-friendly fishes for the greater interests of maintaining ecological balance.
In all aspects, commercial fish farming is profitable and it can't be denied but time has come to think about boosting production of eco-friendly fishes for the sake of protecting the environment and public health.
Government officials and fish experts came up with the observation while addressing the closing ceremony of the National Fish Week-2025 here today.
The Department of Fisheries (DoF) organized the event titled "Evaluation, Closing and Cultural Function" at its conference hall.
Commissioner of Rajshahi division Khondoker Azim Ahmed addressed the meeting as the chief guest with Deputy Commissioner Afia Akhter in the chair.
Additional Commissioner Habibur Rahman, DoF Divisional Director Saifuddin Yeasiya and District Fisheries Officer Jahangir Alam also spoke.
The speakers unanimously mentioned that eco-friendly fish farming involves using climate-resilient technologies, biofloc methods, and integrated farming systems to boost production while minimizing environmental impact and supporting local communities.
Similarly, good aquaculture practices involve composite farming and biofloc technology for enhanced yields, alongside promoting climate-resilient techniques and the use of environment-friendly materials.
Commissioner Azim Ahmed the region focuses on sustainable methods like polyculture and the careful use of probiotics, rather than antibiotics and pesticides, to produce safe fish, reduce costs, and improve the financial stability of farmers.
He said a sustainable method for raising fishes where waste is converted into microbial biomass, which serves as a food source for the fish.
On the occasion, 15 organizations were given crests as recognition of their laudable contribution in this field.
