4 get life-term imprisonment in drugs case in Meherpur

MEHERPUR, Sept 1, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today awarded four people to life-term imprisonment in a case lodged over seizure of 460 bottles of Phensidyl from a truck in the district.

The court also fined Taka 50,000 to each of the convicts, in default; they would have to suffer another one year imprisonment for the same.

The Judge of the Senior Special Judge Court of Meherpur A M Nasim Reza today pronounced the verdict in a crowded courtroom in presence of the three convicts. 

The convicts are - Juwel Hossain, son of Mokhlesh Ali of Koromdi Madhhyapara village under Gangni upazila, Swapon Ali, son of Sabed Ali, Abed Ali, son of Aiyub Ali and Tipu Miah, son of Md Jamirul, all are from the same village.

Public Prosecutor (PP) of Meherpur ASM Saidur Razzak quoting the case documents said that a team of Gangni police seized 460 bottles of Phensidyl syrup from a truck (Kushtia-Ta-11-2009) in Akobpur area on Meherpur-Kushtia road on September 6 in 2019. Police also arrested Swapon Ali, Abed Ali and Tipu Miah from the spot but another convict Juwel Hossain however managed to escape from the scene.

A case was lodged with Gangni Thana against them under Drugs Control Act following the incident. 

Sub-Inspector Abdul Hannan later submitted a charge sheet of the case.

The judgment will come into effect for Juwel Hossain immediately after his arrest, the PP added.
