DINAJPUR, Sept 2, 2025 (BSS) - Import of tomatoes from India has resumed through the Hili land port in the district.

A leading importing company from Chattogram's wholesale market has begun importing tomatoes from the Nashik district of India, confirmed Deputy Assistant Officer at the Plant Quarantine Department of Hili Land Port Md Yusuf Ali.

He said tomato imports resumed at 12:00 noon today when a tomato-laden truck entered the Hili land port from India. On the first day, 28 tonnes of tomatoes were imported, and the import cost per kilogram, including duty, stands at Tk 61, he added.

Importer Enamul Haque said the tomatoes are being brought in from India's Nashik district due to high demand in the domestic market. At the port, tomatoes are being sold at a rate of Tk 100 to Tk 110 per kg. If demand persists, more tomatoes will be imported, he added.
Hili Customs Revenue Officer Nazmul Hossain said 28 tonnes of tomatoes were imported in a single truck today through the land port.

The consignment has been assessed for customs clearance at US$ 500 per tonne, he said, adding that, as tomatoes are a perishable item, customs authorities are providing all necessary support to expedite the release process.

According to the Hili Land Port Plant Quarantine Office, the last time tomatoes were imported through this port was on August 6, 2022.
