3 people jailed for illegal sand extraction in the Padma river

MUNSHIGANJ, Sept 13, 2025 (BSS) - A mobile court has sentenced three people to three months' imprisonment for illegal sand extraction in the Padma river at Louhjang upazila of the district.

The convicts are Md. Mokles, son of Muzaffar Madbar of Goshani village under Dashmina upazila in Patuakhali district; Md. Farukh, son of Hazrat Ali Chokdar of Charchanda village under Shibchar upazila in Madaripur district; and Md. Jewel, son of Md. Khalil Mridha of Kachibunia village under Rangabali upazila in Patuakhali district.

The upazila administration, led by Louhjang Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Executive Magistrate Md. Nesaruddin, conducted a drive in the Padma river near Padma Bridge from Friday midnight to 5 am today and arrested the three for illegal sand extraction.

Later, the mobile court sentenced the arrestees to three months in jail. At the same time, two dredgers used for sand extraction were disabled.

The Upazila Nirbahi Officer said the administration is regularly conducting drives against illegal dredging to protect the river and will continue to do so in the future.
