NETRAKONA, Sept 14, 2025 (BSS) - The bodies of four people who went missing after a speedboat capsized in the Dhanu River in Khaliajuri Upazila of the district, have been recovered, officials said.

Around 9 am today, locals spotted two bodies floating near Balur Char in Panchhat village. Fire service personnel, with help from the locals, later recovered the bodies.

The deceased were identified as Laila, 7, daughter of Swapan Mia, and Shirin, 18, daughter of Nawab Mia of Andhair village in the same upazila.
Earlier on Saturday afternoon, the bodies of two other missing people were recovered. They were Samia, 11, daughter of Samsu Mia, and Ushamoni, 5, daughter of Mofail Mia of the same area.

Deputy Assistant Director of the District Fire Service Hafizur Rahman said the rescue operation has concluded after recovering all four bodies. The bodies were handed over to their families through the chairman of the local union parishad.

According to local sources, the speedboat was hired on Friday to carry the wedding party of Rana Mia, son of Nawab Mia. Before heading to the bride's house, 12 people from the wedding party took the speedboat for a short ride on the haor. At that time, while passing a bulkhead coming from the opposite direction, the speedboat collided with a nearby fishermen's boat.

Then the fishermen of the boat started a fight with the driver. At one stage, the speedboat capsized. The four people went missing and three were injured.

Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) MA Quader confirmed that the bodies have been delivered to the families.

Officer-in-Charge of Khaliajuri Police Station Md Mokbul Hossain said the police completed the inquest of the bodies and are investigating the incident. No case has been filed in this connection so far.
