Rare Raj Crab rescued from Kuakata

PATUAKHALI, Sept 25, 2025 (BSS)- Fishermen have netted Raj Crab, a rare species at the estuaries of three rivers adjacent of Kuakata district here.

The members of coastal environment protection movement rescued the crab in a bloody state at 9am today. 

Later, the crab was released at the sea shore adjacent of the Lembur forest at 2.30pm after primary treatment.

“Our members have rescued the rare species of crab from Lembur forest area … the crab is very much valuable resource in the medical science”, said K M Bacchu Mia, convener of coastal environment protection movement. 

He said, the scientific name of the species is Carcinoscorpius Rotundicauda. The blood of the crab is blue. The species is sustaining as an unchanged entity after evolution occurred nearly 450 million years ago. So, it is called ‘living fossil’, he said.

While there is no use of the crab in the country but it has a huge demand abroad, said Kalapara upazila senior fisheries officer Apu Saha, adding that the species is now on the verge of extinction.

“It is the responsibility of all to protect the rare species …the fishermen have been trained several times not to catch such type of rare species”, said range officer of Mahipur forest department AKM Maniruzzaman.
