GAIBANDHA, Oct 2, 2025 (BSS) - The five-day-long Sharadiya Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of the Hindu community ended today in Gaibandha with the immersion of idols at different water bodies across all seven upazilas of the district amid peace and festivity.
Before immersion, Hindu devotees of all ages took part in singing kirton, performing arati with incense smoke, and dancing in front of the altars to seek divine blessings.
In the evening, the idols of Goddess Durga and other deities were carried out of the puja mandaps in colourful processions before being immersed in rivers, ponds, canals and other water bodies.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Nishat Angella said foolproof security measures were in place with the deployment of police, Rab and Ansar members to ensure a smooth celebration.
A total of 585 puja mandaps were set up across the district, with law enforcers guarding them round the clock.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Choudhury Muazzam Ahmed said the government distributed 292 tonnes of rice among the puja mandaps and ensured uninterrupted electricity supply at night so that devotees could perform rituals, prayers, kirtons and arati without difficulty.
Local leaders of BNP also visited puja mandaps during the festival and exchanged greetings with devotees, said district BNP leader Amirul Islam.
Besides, DC Muazzam Ahmed and SP Angella visited several mandaps separately and extended greetings to organisers and worshippers.
Principal Paresh Chandra Sarker, District Unit president of Bangladesh Puja Udjapon Parishad and general secretary Bimol Kumar Sarker expressed gratitude to the government for ensuring peaceful celebrations of Durga Puja across the district.
