Two AL leaders arrested in Dinajpur border

DINAJPUR, Oct 17, 2025 (BSS) - Police arrested two banned Awami League (AL) leaders while they were preparing to flee to India through Birampur border area here today.

“Two Awami League leaders were detained as they were roaming suspiciously at the border village of Bhelar Par under Mukundapur Union of Birampur upazila on Friday morning,” Superintendent of Police Md Marfat Hossain said.

Addressing at a press briefing at his office, he said that local people intercepted them and asked about their whereabouts, but they could not give them satisfactory reply. 

Later, local people reported to Birampur police station and police brought them to the station, Hossain said.

The detainees are: Mahmudul Azad Ripon (48), joint general secretary of Barguna district AL and Hafizur Rahman Iqbal (57), vice-president of Uzirpur upazila AL and former UP chairman.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Birampur police station Md Momtazul Haque said that the two detainees admitted that they were staying in the border area to flee to India.

The detainees were produced before Dinajpur Senior Judicial Magistrate Court today. 

Court Police Inspector Aminul Islam said that the AL leaders will be sent to jail after an order is issued.
