Man sentenced to life imprisonment in Rangpur murder case

RANGPUR, Nov 25, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced Md Mizanur Rahman, 40, to life-term rigorous imprisonment for killing a man over a land dispute more than 10 years ago at Boro Alampur village in Pirganj upazila of the district.

The court also fined him Taka 10,000, in default of which he will have to suffer six more months of rigorous imprisonment.

The court also sentenced another accused Md Khademul Islam to six months of rigorous imprisonment for injuring a witness in the incident. 
 
The other accused in the case, Md Mahfuzar Rahman, was earlier released due to his death. 

Senior District and Sessions Judge of Rangpur Fazle Khoda Md Nazir delivered the verdict this afternoon in the presence of the accused.

According to the prosecution, a clash erupted over a land dispute at around 11 am on April 1, 2014. During the altercation, accused Mizanur Rahman struck Md Abdul Halim Mia on the head with a Chinese axe, while accused Mahfuzar Rahman hit him with an iron rod, leaving him critically injured.

Abdul Halim later died while undergoing treatment at a hospital.

In the same incident, accused Khademul Islam hit witness Meher Nigar, injuring her.

Following the incident, the victim's brother, Md Abdur Rahim, filed a murder case with Pirganj Police Station.

After examining 14 witnesses, the judge found the accused guilty and pronounced the verdict.

Public Prosecutor Advocate Md Aftab Uddin represented the state, while senior lawyer Advocate Md Abdur Rashid Chowdhury appeared for the defence.
