
GAIBANDHA, Dec 16, 2025 (BSS) - The Great Victory Day was observed in Gaibandha today in a befitting manner with a renewed pledge to build a happy, prosperous and non-communal Bangladesh inspired by the spirit of the Liberation War.
To mark the day, the district administration, cultural organisations, political parties and educational institutions organised a series of programmes.
The celebrations began at sunrise with a 31-gun salute, followed by the placing of floral wreaths at the Shaheed Monument at Gaibandha Poura Park.
Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Masudur Rahman Mollah led the district administration, while Superintendent of Police Md Jashim Uddin led the police department. Leaders of the district Muktijoddha Sangsad, BNP and other political parties also paid tribute.
Later, the deputy commissioner, accompanied by the superintendent of police, hoisted the national flag and released balloons and pigeons at the Zilla Stadium at 8:30am.
Speaking on the occasion, DC Mohammad Masudur Rahman Mollah said December 16 is one of the most glorious days in the nation's history. He noted that Bangladesh has completed 54 years since achieving victory after nine months of the bloody War of Liberation.
A colourful march-past was then held at the stadium with the participation of members of the police, Ansar-VDP, Fire Service, BNCC, Boy Scouts, Girl Guides, students of schools, colleges and madrasahs, and inmates of government-run Shishu Paribars.
The deputy commissioner and the superintendent of police took the salute as chief guest and special guest respectively.
At 11:30am, a reception was accorded to freedom fighters and family members of martyrs at the stadium ground, organised by the district administration in cooperation with the Zila Parishad.
The day's programmes also included children's art and essay competitions on the Liberation War organised by the Bangladesh Shishu Academy, and a documentary film show arranged by the District Information Office.
Other events included a charity football match between the district administration XI and Gaibandha Municipality, sports programmes for women organised by the Mohila Krira Sangstha, and a blood donation camp arranged by the Sandhani Donor Club.
Special prayers were offered at mosques and temples, while improved meals were served at hospitals, the jail and orphanages in observance of the day.
