NARAIL, Jan 14, 2026 (BSS) - Thousands of spectators gathered in Chakoi village of Bichali union in Sadar upazila to witness the traditional horse racing competition of rural Bengal, held on Wednesday afternoon.

The event, which takes place annually on the last day of the Bangla month of Poush, continues to attract widespread attention despite the decline of many rural traditions over time.

Rezaul Islam Jasim of Bichali village said that while many traditional games of rural Bengal are disappearing, horse racing remains a vibrant cultural event in the Chakoi area. “This horse racing competition is a spontaneous participation of the local people, and its continued presence reflects our efforts to preserve our heritage,” he said.

The competition coincided with the three-day Poush Mela fair, which featured various stalls and cultural activities. However, the main attraction for the enthusiastic crowd remained the horse racing. Riders from across the region brought horses of different colors and types to compete, creating an atmosphere filled with excitement as spectators cheered for their favorites.

Thousands of people from the district, as well as neighboring Jashore and Khulna districts, attended the event. Families often stay with local relatives the night before to participate fully in the festivities. Spectators of all ages gathered at the field from morning, watching the horses run at high speed and enjoying the skillful maneuvers of the riders. Applause and cheers filled the air, adding to the festive atmosphere. This year, 12 horses competed in the race.

Md. Aminul Islam, president of the Horse Racing Competition and Poush Mela Celebration Committee, said the event is organized not only for entertainment but also to preserve rural traditions and promote a drug-free society. “Alongside the horse racing, a Zarigan performance was held on Thursday evening, and cultural programs will continue on Friday. The fair runs daily from morning to night,” he said.

Bichali UP member Md. Mazharul Islam emphasized the importance of the event in protecting traditional culture and rural heritage. Morad Hossain Sheikh, a member of the organizing committee, said that this year’s event saw the highest attendance among men, women, and children.

Muhim, a visitor from Abhaynagar in Jashore, said, “We come here every year with friends. This competition reminds us of our lost heritage and provides a day of enjoyment for everyone.”

The annual horse racing competition and Poush Mela continue to serve as a celebration of rural Bengal’s traditions, bringing together communities in joy and cultural pride.
