Eminent social worker Begum Rokeya passes away

NETRAKONA, Jan 30, 2026 (BSS) - Begum Rokeya, a pioneer of the women's empowerment movement in greater Mymensingh and a distinguished social worker, passed away at the age of 78. 

She died today at 2:40pm (Bangladesh time) while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Stockholm of Sweden.

Begum Rokeya was the founder and former Executive Director of the non-governmental organization 'Swabalambi Unnayan Samiti' (SUS).

She leaves behind two daughters, numerous admirers, and well-wishers.

Confirming the news, current SUS Executive Director Sopan Kumar Pal told BSS that arrangements were being made to bring her body to Netrakona from Sweden. 

"After completing the necessary formalities, she will be laid to rest."

Born on May 17, 1948, in Kaurat village under Kendua Upazila, Begum Rokeya overcame numerous challenges in her personal life to earn both a BA and a BEd degree. 

She started her teaching career in 1969 at Netrakona Government Girls' High School. In 1985, she left her teaching profession to establish 'Swabalambi Unnayan Samiti' with like-minded individuals. 

Under her leadership, the organization played a significant role in advancing women's development and poverty alleviation in the Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions.

She was actively involved with various social and educational institutions, including the Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, Bangladesh Shishu Academy, PKSF, and the Red Crescent Society.

Swabalambi Unnayan Samiti President Professor Rowshan Akhter and Executive Director Sopan Kumar Pal have expressed profound grief at her passing and prayed for her soul's peace and extended heartfelt sympathy to her bereaved family.
