Five farmers killed as dump truck hits van in Mohadevpur

NAOGAON, Jan 31, 2026 (BSS) - Five indigenous farmers were killed after a dump truck ran over a battery-operated rickshaw-van in Mohadevpur upazila of Naogaon early today.

The accident occurred around 4:30 am on the Mohadevpur-Patnitala regional road at Shibpur Pathakathi area of the upazila.

The deceased were identified as Biren Pahan (35), son of late Koko Pahan, Ujjal Pahan (38), son of late Naren Pahan, Bipul Pahan (25), son of Jhotu Pahan, Sanju Urao (45), son of late Mangra Urao, and Biplab Pahan (22), son of Jhotu Pahan. All are residents of Nurpur area under Enayetpur Union of the upazila.

Police and hospital sources said the five farmers were heading to Mohadevpur Haat from Nurpur on a battery-run rickshaw-van early in the morning to sell turmeric produced on their own land. 

When the van reached the Pathakathi area on the Mohadevpur-Patnitala regional road, a speeding dump truck ran over it.

Acting Station Officer of Mohadevpur Fire Service and Civil Defence Abul Kashem said the dump truck was heading towards Patnitala from Mohadevpur when it lost control and ran over the van. Two people died on the spot and three others were rescued in critical condition and sent to the Upazila Health Complex.

Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of Mohadevpur Upazila Health Complex Imrul Kayes said Fire Service rescued five people in two phases and brought them to the hospital. Of them, four were already dead, while the remaining one died on the way to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mohadevpur Police Station Shahidul Islam said police visited the accident site immediately after receiving the information. After the accident, the dump truck was found abandoned in a roadside canal, while its driver and helper fled the scene. Legal action is underway in this regard.
