KHULNA, Mar 06, 2026 (BSS)- Farmers are happy as mung bean (Mug Dal) production hit bumper production during this Robi season.

Mung cultivation was expanded to 1,108 hectares of land against the target of 254 hectors set by the DAE this season, officials said.

Harvesting of the mung beans is nearing completion and farmers are happy with bumper production of crop.

The crop was cultivated in Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat, and Narail districts with other crops like watermelon, onion, garlic, chili, pulses, potatoes, pumpkin, mustard, and other vegetables, maize, wheat, gourd nuts, capsicum and many others.

The Department of Agricultural Expansion (DAE) in the region initially has set a target to cultivate 254 hectares of land with a production target of 288 tonnes of mung beans.

The DAE has achieved a bumper production of 1,262 tonnes of mung beans from 1,108 hectares of land, exceeding 436 percent from the target.

Officials of the DAE said harvesting of over 70 percent mung bean have been completed before Eid-ul-Fitr, while the remains will be harvested within two weeks next.

"Farmers of the Khulna agriculture region have completed harvesting of their crops and they have got a bumper output," said DAE Additional Director of Khulna region, Rafiqul Islam.

"Suitable climate conditions alongside integrated irrigation during the growing season gave farmers hope of getting their desired production," he said, adding that the remaining crop harvesting will be completed by two weeks of this month.

Besides, Bangladesh Krishi Bank and other commercial banks have disbursed crop loans to the farmers for boosting production.

"Around 50 thousand families have achieved self-reliance by farming mung beans on these lands and improved their livelihoods with the support of the DAE during the current Robi season in the region," he added.

According to the DAE sources, the government has distributed quality seeds and fertilizers among small and marginal farmers to inspire them in expanding the cultivation of Robi crops.

Talking to BSS, farmers Saheb Ali, Moniruzzaman and Ashok Biswas of the coastal belt of Koyra area said they have changed their fortunes through cultivating various crops, including more profitable mung bean on the saline resilient coastal lands during the Robi crops season.
Farmer Mohiuddin Gazi of Amadi union under Koyra upazila in Khulna said many farmers sowed mung bean, mustard seeds, watermelon after harvesting short-duration Aman rice on the same land to enhance crop intensity and get more profits.
