Five houses, four cattle gutted in Kurigram fire

KURIGRAM, March 25, 2026 (BSS) - A devastating fire broke out in Ulipur upazila of the district last night, leaving five houses gutted and four cattle dead, along with extensive damage to household belongings and stored crops.

The incident occurred in Jantarhat area under Buraburi union. According to the affected homeowner, Rafiqul Islam, the estimated loss stands at around Taka 15 lakh.

The fire is believed to have originated in the kitchen before rapidly spreading to adjacent structures, including a cowshed.

Despite efforts by local residents to contain the flames, the fire quickly engulfed the entire homestead. Three dwelling houses, a kitchen, a cowshed, and all household furniture were reduced to ashes. Four cows trapped inside the shed perished in the blaze.

In addition to structural losses, significant quantities of stored crops were destroyed, including approximately 20 maunds of paddy, four maunds of mustard, potatoes, and other essential goods.

Being informed, a unit from Ulipur Fire Service and Civil Defence rushed to the scene and eventually brought the fire under control.
Saiful Islam, acting station in-charge of Ulipur Fire Service and Civil Defence, said the fire may have been caused by an electrical short circuit. However, the exact cause and full extent of the damage will be determined following a detailed investigation.
