
NAOGAON, April 11, 2026 (BSS) - A seven-kilometer canal re-excavation project has been officially inaugurated in Barshail union under Sadar upazila aiming to enhance agricultural productivity in the region.
The project, stretching from Kalitola Bridge to Hapaniya Bazar, is being implemented at a cost of Taka 98.74 lakh.
Local Member of Parliament Zahidul Islam Dhalu formally inaugurated the work on Saturday afternoon.
Following the inauguration, a view-sharing meeting was held at Tentulia College Ground, where the MP addressed as the chief guest.
In his speech, he highlighted the historical significance of canal excavation initiatives, recalling that Ziaur Rahman had previously undertaken similar programs to boost agricultural output. He added that such efforts are being revived on a national scale.
Zahidul Islam emphasized that the canal is being re-excavated after nearly two decades and expressed optimism about its impact. According to him, the project will benefit thousands of farmers across Barshail, Hapania, and Chakgouri unions by improving irrigation, reducing production costs, and increasing yields of rice, vegetables, and other crops.
The meeting was presided over by Barshail Union BNP President Sanwar Hossain Pintu and attended by several local leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, including district and upazila representatives.
The re-excavation work is being carried out by the National Development Programme in collaboration with the Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF), as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen rural infrastructure and agricultural sustainability in the region.
