7 to die in Mymensingh college student murder case

MYMENSINGH, April 21, 2026 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced seven people to death in the murder case of college student Shahinur Alam alias Iqbal, who was killed in 2021 over a land dispute in Tarakanda upazila of the district in 2021.

 Judge Md. Zakir Hossain of the Mymensingh District and Sessions Judge Court delivered the verdict in the afternoon.

The those sentenced to death are Asif Rana Naeem alias Rana, Md. Golam Hossain alias Gulu, Abdul Helim, Mohammad Ali, Farid Ahmed alias Babu, Yunus Ali alias Innas Ali and Shamsul Haque.

Two women accused—Khaleda Akhter and Rehena Khatun—were sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment, fined Taka 25,000 each, and given an additional one-year rigorous imprisonment in default of payment.

According to the prosecution, Shahinur Alam, a civil engineering student at Rumdo Polytechnic Institute, went missing on May 31, 2021, after leaving his home in Palashkanda Tanpara village of Tarakanda upazila. After five days of searching, police recovered his decomposed body from an abandoned septic tank under a bamboo grove in the same area.

The body was sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for autopsy. Following the discovery, a murder case was filed on June 6, 2021, accusing the defendants of killing him over a land dispute.

Police later submitted a charge sheet after investigation. The court delivered the verdict after examining testimony from 24 witnesses and hearing arguments from both sides.

Public prosecutor Advocate Anwar Aziz Tutul confirmed the matter.
