Child killed in nor’wester storm in Shyamnagar, houses damaged

SATKHIRA, May 19, 2026 (BSS) - A child named Sharmin was killed after a palm tree collapsed on her during a nor’wester storm in Shyamnagar of the district.

The incident occurred today at around 4:30 pm in Ishwaripur village of the upazila.

At the same time, several houses were reportedly damaged in the No. 9 Sora area of Gabura Union due to the storm.

The deceased, Sharmin, 9, was the daughter of Abdur Rauf of Ishwaripur village in the upazila.

According to family sources, Sharmin was playing beside her house in the afternoon. Suddenly, a nor’wester storm began and a palm tree broke and fell on her body, leaving her seriously injured.

Family members quickly rescued her and took her to Shyamnagar Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared her dead.

Dr. Ziaur Rahman, Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer of Shyamnagar, told BSS that the child had died before being brought to the hospital.

Gabura Union Parishad Chairman Masudul Alam said three houses belonging to three families in his union were damaged  in the nor’wester storm.

He added that officials are currently checking on the affected families.
