Canal re-excavation to boost agriculture: Ali Newaz Mahmood

RAJBARI, May 12, 2026 (BSS) - State Minister for Cultural Affairs Ali Newaz Mahmood Khyom today said the canal re-excavation programme would bring significant changes to the country's agricultural sector.

He said, "Once the canal excavation programme is completed, fish cultivation will increase, waterlogging will decrease, and farmers will no longer suffer from water shortages for retting jute."

The state minister made the remarks while inaugurating the canal re-excavation programme in Goalanda upazila of the district.

Deputy Commissioner Afroza Parvin, Additional Deputy Commissioner Tariful Hasan, Goalanda Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sathi Das, Goalanda Upazila BNP President Md Nizam Uddin and General Secretary Mosharraf Hossain, among others, were present at the event.

The two projects involve re-excavation of canals stretching from Goalanda Nazir Uddin Pilot High School to Vishwanath Para Beri Bandh, and from Ujan Char Habildar Mandal's Para Kalam's house to Faizuddin Matubbar's Para Salim Matubbar's house.

The re-excavation of the two canals is expected to help eliminate waterlogging, increase agricultural production, expand irrigation facilities and improve floodwater drainage in the area.
