
DHAKA, May 12, 2026 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced three people to death and six others to life imprisonment in a case lodged over the murder of village doctor Md Rezaul Karim alias Abu doctor in Telapocha area under Goalanda Police Station in Rajbari.
Judge Md Rohibul Islam of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 pronounced the judgment this noon.
The three death-row-convicts are Babul Sardar, Tokon Sardar and Gaziar Sardar. The court also fined them Taka 10,000 each.
The tribunal sentenced Ator Ali Chairman, Raihan Sardar, Habibir Rahman alias Hobi Sardar, Helal Khan, Jillur Rahman and Jia Mondal to life imprisonment. It also fined them Taka 10,000 each, to suffer six months more behind bars in default. The court acquitted 13 others of the charges.
According to the case statement, an altercation took place between former chairman Ator Ali's son and Jubo League leader Bablu Sardar and Debugram Union Chairman Hafizul Islam during a conference of the Awami League at Goalanda's Ward No. 2 on October 14, 2019.
Following the incident, Bablu Sardar, Tokon Sardar, Raihan Sardar, Gaziar Sardar and several others, led by Ator Ali, took position at the three-road intersection of Ator Ali Bazar. As supporters of Chairman Hafizul Islam were returning through the area, they were assaulted.
At that time, village doctor Abu Doctor was also passing through the same road. The attackers allegedly detained and severely beat him. He was first taken to Goalanda Upazila Health Complex and later shifted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated. There, he died while undergoing treatment.
