GAZIPUR, May 21, 2026 (BSS) - Financial assistance cheques worth Taka 1.15 crore from the BRTA Trustee Board fund were distributed today among the family members of those killed and injured in road accidents in the district.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md Nurul Karim Bhuiyan distributed the cheques among 27 victims and families at a function at 'Bhawal Conference Room' of the Deputy Commissioner's office.
Expressing deep sympathy to the affected families, the DC said, "Financial assistance can never erase the pain of losing a loved one or sustaining a permanent disability. However, it will give strength to these families to turn around anew during this difficult time of crisis."
The DC strongly urged drivers, workers, and pedestrians to strictly follow traffic laws and control vehicle speed on roads to prevent road accidents. He reminded everyone that an accident does not just take away one life, but it affects an entire family.
The function was also attended, among others, by Additional Deputy Commissioner Salma Khatun, senior officials of BRTA and law enforcement agencies, and local dignitaries.
Md. Selim, a 35-year-old former pickup driver who came to receive the cheque at the event, said, "The accident took away my leg and brought my family to the streets. We were surviving on debts and people's mercy. After receiving this government assistance today, I feel like I can put food in my children's mouths again. I want to live again."
Khadija Akhter, another recipient who lost her young son in a road accident, said, "I will never get back the one who is gone in exchange for anything. But the way the government stood by us in this time of severe adversity, at least we found a means to survive with the rest of the family."
