
KHULNA, June 4, 2026 (BSS) - A suspected active member of the notorious Karim Sharif pirate gang was arrested by the Bangladesh Coast Guard during an operation in the Sundarbans, along with firearms and ammunition.
Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon said that, under government directives to eliminate all criminal groups operating in the Sundarbans, the Bangladesh Coast Guard has been conducting two special operations titled "Operation Restore Peace in Sundarbans" and "Operation Mangrove Shield."
As part of the ongoing Operation Mangrove Shield, Coast Guard personnel apprehended an active member of the Karim Sharif gang and seized firearms, ammunition and various items allegedly used in robbery and illegal wildlife hunting.
Acting on intelligence reports, Coast Guard officials learned that members of the Karim Sharif gang were staying near a canal adjacent to the Amurbunia Forest Office in the Sundarbans under Sharankhola Upazila of Bagerhat district.
Based on the information, Coast Guard Base Mongla launched a special operation in the area at around 3 pm on Wednesday, he added.
Sensing the presence of law enforcement personnel, the gang members attempted to flee.
The Coast Guard pursued them and succeeded in arresting one suspect, identified as Al-Amin Bacchu Hawlader, 45.
During the operation, authorities seized four single-barrel guns, 20 rounds of live cartridges, 74 rounds of blank cartridges, seven air-gun pellets, a telescope, a solar panel, a battery, a walkie-talkie charger, a deer head with antlers, three cartons of cigarettes, two sacks of rice and a wooden boat.
