
NATORE, June 5, 2026 (BSS) - A month-long afforestation and biodiversity conservation programme was inaugurated today at the Chalan Beel Gate area in Singra upazila of the district, marking World Environment Day.
The initiative, organized by the Chalan Beel Biodiversity Protection Committee, aims to strengthen environmental conservation efforts and protect the region's rich biodiversity.
The programme is being conducted under the theme, "We Can Build a Flock of Environmentally Conscious Youth," with the goal of inspiring young people to take an active role in environmental protection and ensuring the sustainable management of natural resources.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Abdullah Al Rifat formally inaugurated the programme by planting 50 saplings of various fruit-bearing, forest and medicinal species.
Among others, Professor Shariful Islam Bulbul, member secretary of Singra Upazila BNP, Ibrahim Khalil Fatik, former chairman of Kalami Union Parishad, Professor Akhtaruzzaman, president of the Chalan Beel Biodiversity Protection Committee, and Saidur Rahman, headmaster of Singra Model Government Primary School, attended the inauguration ceremony.
Speaking on the occasion, General Secretary of the Chalan Beel Biodiversity Protection Committee Saiful Islam said the organization has been working to protect the environment and biodiversity of the Chalan Beel region for more than 12 years.
He said the committee's activities are driven by a deep commitment to nature and wildlife conservation and added that plantation and biodiversity protection programmes would continue throughout June across the Chalan Beel area.
The month-long campaign is considered a significant step toward preserving the ecosystem of Chalan Beel, the country's largest wetland, which plays a vital role in maintaining ecological balance and supporting regional biodiversity.
