GAZIPUR, June 6, 2026 (BSS) - Gazipur Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md Nurul Karim Bhuiyan today stressed the importance of citizen awareness in preventing dengue, asking, "Mosquitoes are doing their job, but are you fulfilling your responsibilities as a human being?"
He made the remarks as the chief guest at a post-rally gathering organised as part of an massive dengue prevention and awareness programme jointly arranged by the Gazipur District Administration, Gazipur City Corporation, Civil Surgeon's Office and Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College and Hospital.
Addressing the gathering, Nurul Karim Bhuiyan said, "Everyone should use this Saturday for cleaning and maintaining hygiene on their own initiative. Keeping your yard, surroundings, homes and roads clean is entirely your own responsibility."
Warning all present, he said, "If we fail to fulfill this civic responsibility, the deadly dengue mosquito will destroy you and your loved ones. Therefore, strict attention must be paid to ensuring that water where mosquitoes can breed does not accumulate under any circumstances."
He added, "Clean waste and garbage regularly to keep yourself safe and fulfill your civic responsibility to keep others safe as well."
A colorful awareness rally began in the morning from the premises of the Deputy Commissioner's Office in Gazipur. The rally marched through the city's main roads and concluded with a brief gathering at the premises of Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College and Hospital.
According to medical experts, dengue is not an ordinary fever but a life-threatening viral disease. The virus spreads from one person to another through the bite of the female mosquito known as "Aedes aegypti". This mosquito usually prefers clean and stagnant water inside or around homes rather than dirty drains for laying eggs and breeding. Aedes mosquitoes can breed even in a teaspoon of accumulated water.
After a mosquito bite, the dengue virus enters the human body and rapidly reduces blood platelets. When common dengue develops into dengue haemorrhagic fever or toxic shock syndrome, internal organs such as the liver, kidneys and lungs begin to bleed.
Without timely treatment, blood pressure can drop rapidly, leading to death within a very short time.
Every year, thousands of families lose their earning members or beloved children due to a single mosquito bite.
At the gathering, medical officers and experts highlighted a three-tier preventive approach to protect people from dengue. They said destroying the breeding sources remains the most effective method. Water should not be allowed to remain for more than three days in flower pots, broken plastic containers, coconut shells, tyres or rooftop gardens.
They also advised people to wear body-covering clothes during the daytime, particularly in the morning and evening, use mosquito nets while sleeping and apply mosquito repellents or liquid repellents.
The experts further advised people to seek medical attention immediately after symptoms appear. In case of fever, dengue testing (NS1 Antigen) should be done promptly without negligence. They warned against taking painkillers such as aspirin or ibuprofen without a doctor's advice, as these medicines may increase the risk of bleeding.
Among others, Gazipur Civil Surgeon Dr Mamunur Rahman, Director of Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College and Hospital Dr Md Aminul Islam and Chief Waste Management Officer of Gazipur City Corporation Sohel Rana were present at the programme.
Additional Police Commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police Belayet Hossain, Deputy Director (Local Government) Ahammad Hossain Bhuiya, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Sohel Rana, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Shahriar Nazir and Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sajjat Hossain, along with senior officials, representatives of various government and private organisations and citizens, also participated spontaneously in the awareness programme.
