AL leader arrested in Rangpur

RANGPUR, June 17, 2026 (BSS) - Police have arrested Awami League (AL) leader Akhteruzzaman Bhutto in the murder case of auto-rickshaw driver Manik Mia, who was killed on July 18, 2024, during the anti-discrimination student movement in Rangpur city. 

"We arrested AL leader Akhteruzzaman Bhutto (Former Ward No 31 Rangpur City Corporation Councilor) from the city's Medical Mour area at 10:30 am on Tuesday," Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tajhat police station Md Ataur Rahman told BSS this noon. 
 
He also served as the Vice-president of Ward No 31 Awami League. 
 
Akhteruzzaman Bhutto, son of late Sekender Ali, is a resident of the city's Tajhat (Sheikhpara) area under the Tajhat police station of Rangpur Metropolitan Police.

He is the accused no 69 in the martyr Manik Mia murder case filed by the victim's mother Noorjahan Begum at Tajhat police station of Rangpur Metropolitan Police on June 6, 2025.
 
Earlier, Manik Mia, 35, son of late Sekendar Ali, of Purbo Ghaghot Para area in the city's Ward No 15, was killed while taking part in the anti-discrimination student movement in the Rangpur Model College Gate area on July 18, 2024. 
 
"We produced arrested AL leader Akhteruzzaman Bhutto before the Rangpur Metropolitan Magistrate Court today," the OC added.
