
CHATTOGRAM, June 22, 2026 (BSS) - Chattogram City Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain has sought technical and financial support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to enhance waste management in the city, improve collection capacity and establish a cleaner environment.
Dr. Shahadat made the request during a courtesy visit from JICA's newly appointed Chief Representative in Bangladesh, Takahashi Junko, at the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) office in Tiger Pass today.
The mayor expressed gratitude to JICA for its ongoing waste management technical assistance project, which is set to continue until 2029. This project encompasses an analysis of the current waste management situation in Chattogram, identification of challenges, the development of a comprehensive waste management master plan for the city, and the implementation of waste reduction initiatives.
Additionally, it aims to enhance waste collection, transportation, and intermediate treatment systems, ensure the safe management of existing dumpsites, prepare for the construction of new landfills, promote public awareness regarding waste reduction through environmental education and outreach activities, strengthen the source separation, collection, and treatment systems for medical waste, gather waste management data, and report to the Department of Environment in accordance with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2021, while also facilitating experience exchange with other cities.
ICA Chief Representative Takahashi Junko updated the mayor on the advancements of various development initiatives in Chattogram that are being financed by JICA and requested the CCC for the effective execution of these projects.
Acting CEO and Secretary of CCC Md. Ashraful Amin, Chief Conservancy Officer Captain Ikhtiar Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, and Chief Engineer Anisur Rahman spoke on the measures necessary to enhance waste management within the city.
Also present at the meeting on behalf of JICA were representative Hideki Osawa, Deputy Programme Manager Md. Abdullah Bin Hossain, and National Specialist of JICA's Waste Management Project Golam Sarwar.
