Two children killed in landslide in Chakaria

COX'S BAZAR, July 9, 2026 (BSS) - Two sleeping children were killed in a landslide in Chakaria upazila of Cox's Bazar early on Thursday.

The landslide occurred in the early hours of Thursday (July 9) at Mohsenia Kata Pahari village under Ward No. 7 of Baraitali Union in the upazila.

One of the deceased was identified as Rumi Akter, 15, daughter of Mohammad Kajal of Mohsenia Kata village and a Class ten student of Baraitali Dakhil Madrasa. 

The other victim was Mohammad Tausif, 10, son of Abdul Majid and a Class four student of the local government primary school. 

Baraitali Union Parishad Chairman Mohammad Chhalekuzzaman said several villages had remained inundated for the last two days and the deaths of the two children in the landslide particularly tragic.

Chakaria Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Shaheen Delwar confirmed the deaths caused by the landslide.

With the latest incident, the death toll from landslides in Cox's Bazar over the past four days has risen to 17, of them, 13 were Rohingyas who died in the Rohingya refugee camps in Ukhiya.
