DHAKA, 8 July 2025 (BSS) – Fact-checking platform BanglaFact, operated by the Press Institute Bangladesh (PIB), has identified a misleading video on recovering weapons from recognized drug dealers who are actually supporting Awami League, not Jamaat-e-Islami.
BanglaFact's investigation found that the video is actually on recovering weapons from recognized drug dealers, not from the coordinator or Jamaat-e-Islami supporters.
In a statement, BanglaFact mentioned that a video has been circulated on social media claiming that the army recently conducted a raid in Gobindaganj Upazila of Gaibandha and arrested local coordinators and leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami along with a large quantity of local weapons and narcotics.
However, BanglaFact verified that the people arrested in the video were not coordinators or activists of Jamaat-e-Islami.
Rather, they were all drug dealers and Awami League supporters, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Gobindaganj Police Station told BanglaFact.
The same video was found on the media outlet's Facebook page after searching for the Mohana TV logo in the video. The title of the video published on July 5 revealed that members of the joint forces conducted a raid in Gobindaganj, Gaibandha and arrested four people with local weapons and drugs.
Later, detailed information on this matter was available from reports published in several media outlets on the same date. These media outlets reported that the army and police conducted a raid in the Buzruk Boalia area of the city in Gobindaganj on the night of July 4.
During the raid, four people were arrested along with 36 ramdas, four hand axes, one toy pistol, nine mobile phones, one laptop, cash Taka 6,458 and 37 yaba tablets from the house of local Azad Mandal and the office of business cooperative society.
The arrested persons are Azad Mandal (35), Mosharraf Hossain (33), Ashadul Islam (42) and Mehedi Hasan (25).
However, most media reports on the matter did not mention the political identities of the four arrested individuals.
However, a report published in Desh Rupantor revealed that the arrested individuals were under the umbrella of the previous Awami League government.
BanglaFact contacted Bulbul Islam, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Gobindaganj thana, on his mobile phone to find out the political identities of the four people arrested in this incident. He said, "All those arrested in this incident are drug dealers. They are not at all involved with the anti-discrimination student movement or Jamaat, but rather they are from the Awami League."
The BanglaFact investigation team said that the claim of footage being circulated on X is false.
