KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 7, 2025 (BSS/AFP) - Malaysia's king Sultan Ibrahim left the country Friday for "overseas" medical treatment, the palace said, without disclosing the monarch's destination or his medical condition.

"The King departed for overseas to undergo treatment," the palace said in a statement, adding that two of Sultan Ibrahim's sons joined him on his plane.

"The matter has been duly conveyed to the Conference of Rulers and the federal government," the statement said.

"All Malaysians are urged to pray for His Majesty's swift recovery and continued well-being," it added.

The king departed from Subang air base near the capital Kuala Lumpur. The palace did not disclose the treatment he was receiving abroad.

Sultan Ibrahim underwent an angioplasty procedure at Gleneagles Medical Centre in Singapore in 2016.

In 2023, he had shoulder surgery to treat an old injury at a hospital in Kuala Lumpur.

Malaysia is a constitutional monarchy, with a unique arrangement that sees the throne change hands every five years between the rulers of nine Malaysian states headed by centuries-old Islamic royalty.
