WARSAW, Sept 7, 2025 (BSS/AFP) - An activist from Russian punk feminist protest group Pussy Riot has been arrested by Polish border guards with a warrant for her detention issued by Turkmenistan, Polish media reported Sunday.
Asked about the whereabouts of Aisoltan Niiazova, a spokeswoman for Bialystok region's border guards in northeastern Poland told AFP "a Russian citizen was indeed arrested" Saturday.
"The woman's details are in Interpol's wanted database," said Katarzyna Zdanowicz. She added that she could not reveal details about the detained person, in line with Polish legislation.
Local police spokesman Tomasz Krupa said that "this person remains in police detention."
"She will be taken to the prosecutor's office, probably on Monday, and then a court will decide what to do," he added.
Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza said the activist, of Turkmen origin, was detained as soon as she crossed the border with Lithuania.
Pussy Riot activists are vocal critics of Russian President Vladimir Putin and has campaigned notably against the conflict in Ukraine, of which Poland is a close ally.
Niiazova had previously been detained briefly, then released in Slovenia and Croatia on an Interpol warrant.
