SUNAMGANJ, Feb 9, 2026 (BSS) - Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami candidate from Sunamganj-1 constituency Maulana Tofail Ahmed Khan has outlined an ambitious plan for the development of Sunamganj-1 constituency, emphasizing proper use of mineral resources and alleviating poverty.
Sunamganj-1, comprising Dharmapasha, Madhyanagar, Jamalganj and Tahirpur upazilas, is considered as one of the most natural resource-rich constituencies in the district.
The area is home to three customs stations, famous tourist destinations including Tanguar Haor, as well as sand-stone reserves and fish sanctuaries.
Talking to BSS, Tofail Ahmed said sustainable development of the constituency is only possible through planned utilization of its natural resources.
“My priority is to improve the quality of life of the people and alleviate poverty through proper planning, use of government assistance and “Zakat” funds,” he said.
He added that he would not allow looting or mismanagement in the industrially significant region.
The Jamaat candidate pledged to ensure equitable distribution of resources, justice, and fundamental rights of the people. He also promised to protect workers’ rights and unite people from all communities, regardless of political affiliation, in development initiatives.
According to him, introducing modern, work-oriented education and developing skilled manpower would help bring marginalized people into the mainstream of development.
On electoral code of conduct, Tofail Ahmed said his party is strictly following the election code of conduct and providing training to leaders and activists to ensure free and fair polls. “There is no alternative to respecting the code of conduct,” he said.
Regarding the proposed referendum on the July Charter, he described it as a demand of the country’s 180 million people, claiming it would restore voting rights and bring state reforms following last year’s mass uprising.
He confirmed that Jamaat-e-Islami is campaigning for a “yes” vote.
Expressing optimism about the upcoming elections, Tofail Ahmed said voters would be able to cast their ballots without fear, intimidation or interference.
The Sunamganj-1 constituency has a total of 501,505 voters, including 256,185 men, 245,360 women and 10 third-gender voters.
Besides Jamaat-e-Islami’s Maulana Tofail Ahmed Khan, BNP candidate Kamruzzaman Kamrul and Nezame Islam Party candidate Maulana Mozzamil Haque are contesting the seat.
With daily processions, rallies and meetings across villages and marketplaces, the election atmosphere is intensifying in this haor-dominated constituency at the foothills of the Meghalaya hills.
While candidates campaign on promises of change and development, voters remain watchful, aware of the strategic importance of Sunamganj-1 in the national political landscape.
