
SANGSAD BHABAN, April 27, 2026 (BSS) - Lawmakers today said those who want to abandon the constitution have no respect to the independence at all.
Taking part in the discussion on thanksgiving motion on the President's speech in the house, they said the determination of discard the constitution means disrespect to the independence.
Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal was in the chair.
"The constitution may be amended time to time but it cannot be rejected completely as it is achievement of our independence", said ruling party lawmaker Md Shahjahan of Noakhali-4.
"We want to protect our achievement as it is not accepted to bring back such like situation when the Awami League government killed the democracy through introducing one party government after the independence," the lawmaker added.
The first session of the 13th parliament began on 12 March with President Mohammed Shahabuddin delivering his address.
The Business Advisory Committee later fixed 50 hours for discussion on the speech. Chief Whip Md Nurul Islam moved the motion of thanks on the president's address, which was seconded by Whip Mia Nuruddin Ahmed Apu.
Taking part in the discussion, state minister for public administration Abdul Bari said the country is running by the constitution and we took oath under the purview of the constitution, saying that it is possible to execute the July National Charter under the constitution.
Terming the constitution as a living document, ruling party lawmaker Barrister Muhammad Nawshad Zamir of Panchagarch-1 said the constitution is an identity of the nation and we will move forward with this constitution.
Talking about the economic situation of the country, Md Zonayed Abdur Rahim Saki, lawmaker of Brahmanbaria-6, said the fascist regime created a dependent economy in the country while the current government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is trying to convert energy crisis into opportunity through strengthening the energy sector.
Calling upon the opposition to shun ill motive in the politics, whip Rafiqul Islam of Khulna-3 said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has introduced goodwill in politics in the journey of democracy, so, the opposition should enhance cooperation in the politics.
BNP lawmakers Sarder Sharfuddin Ahmed of Barishal-2, Lutfar Rahman Azad of Tangail-1, Manzurul Karim Roni of Gazipur-2, M Iqbal Hossen of Mymensingh-3, opposition lawmakers Enamul Huq of Naogaon-2, Syed Jainal Abedin of Dhaka-4, Ali Asgar of Pabna-3, Ataur Rahman of Narail-2, Afzal Hossen of Kushtia-4, National Citizen Party (NCP) lawmaker Akhter Hossain of Rangpur-4, Masum Reza of Netrokona-5, Mashiur Rahman Khan of Bagerhat-1 and Kamrul Hasan of Mymensingh-6, also participated in the discussion.
