Dr Ziaur Rahman becomes new VC of SMU

DHAKA, April 27, 2026 (BSS) - Professor Dr Md Ziaur Rahman Chowdhury has been 
appointed the new vice-chancellor (VC) of the Sylhet Medical University 
(SMU).

According to a notification from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, 
the tenure of the vice chancellorship of Prof. Dr. Ziaur Rahman will be four 
years, and he must resign from any government service before assuming the VC 
position.

He has been instructed to perform his duties in accordance with Section 12 of 
the Sylhet Medical University Act, 2018, and to receive a salary in line with 
his position.

Prof. Dr. Ziaur Rahman specializes in neonatology, child and adolescent 
health, and most recently served as the Principal of Sylhet MAG Osmani 
Medical College and Hospital.
