Proposed budget for FY 27 won’t at all be difficult to execute: MPs

SANGSAD BHABAN, June 16, 2026 (BSS) – Lawmakers today said the proposed budget for fiscal year 2026-27 (FY27) would not at all be difficult to implement because of the government’s the austerity policy.

Taking part in the general discussion on the national budget at the Jatiya Sangsad here, the lawmakers said the implementation of the proposed budget would not be difficult and hoped that the budget would fulfill the expectations of the general people.

Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on June 11 unveiled a Taka 9.38 trillion national budget for 2026-27 setting the GDP growth target at 6.5 percent with aim to rebound from the provisional 4.14 percent growth recorded in the outgoing fiscal year.

Regarding the implementation of the budget, State Minister for Textiles and Jute Md Shariful Alam said the proposed budget will successfully be implemented under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in line with the previous record set by the BNP government led by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.

Terming the budget as exemplary, Alam also lawmaker from Kishorganj-6 said the proposed budget has waved different types of taxes particularly duty on 61 essentials and advance income tax(AIT) and these initiatives will strengthen the economy of the country and easier the livelihood expenditure of the common people.

BNP lawmaker M Abu Sufian of Chattogram-9 said the implementation of the budget would not impossible anyhow as the government reduced the operating cost in the proposed budget but increases the development cost.
Terming the budget as peoples friendly, another treasury bench lawmaker M Fakhrul Islam of Noakhali-5 said the proposed budget is the biggest one in the history of Bangladesh as the budget will bring positive impact on the economy.

Highlighting the allocation of the proposed budget, BNP lawmaker of Natore-3 Anwarul Islam said the proposed has significantly raised the allocation of education, health and agriculture sector as the initiative will help to bring overall development of the country.

The proposed budget has earmarked over Taka 1.36,000 crore for education sector, Taka 69,606 crore for health sector and Taka 28,000 crore for agriculture sector. 

Participating in the discussion, another BNP lawmaker SM Jahangir Hossain of Dhaka-18 said in 1976-77, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman placed a budget of Taka 19,000 and after coming to power in 1991, former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia placed a budget of Taka 15,584 crore to boost the economy of the country.

To uphold the economy, he said the government led by incumbent Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has placed the proposed budget for 2026-27 in line with the implementation record of these previous budgets.  

About the significant allocation for education sector, opposition Bangladesh Jamaat-e Islami lawmaker of Faridpur-1 Md Elias Molla said the allocation for the education sector is 2 percent of the GDP and Taka 49,000 crore more than the allocation earmarked in the previous budget.

Referring to the proposed budget as women friendly, ruling party lawmaker Fahima Nasrin of women seat-29 said the proposed budget has allocated Taka 5,196 crore for the women and children affairs ministry, saying that the allocation will be effective for the development of the women in the country.

Sharply criticizing the proposed budget, Opposition lawmaker M Raihan Siraji of Ranpur-1 said although the proposed budget is very much healthy but the overall size of the budget is not healthy at all as the budget outlay is entirely depends on tax.

The proposed budget has set a target of revenue earning of Taka 6,95,000 crore but the government should to watch the previous revenue earning record carefully, said another opposition lawmaker of Nilphamari-2 Al Faruque Abdul Latif.

In FY25, the NBR collected around Tk371,000 crore, while the government set a target of Tk499,000 crore for FY26, over 34% higher than the previous year’s revenue collection.

Sajeda Samad of women seat-42, M Abdus Sattar of Nilphamari-1, M Moktar Ali of Jashore-6, M Abul Hasan of Sylhet-5 and independent lawmaker AZM Rezwanul Huq of Dinajpur-5, took part in the budget discussion.
