
SANGSAD BHABAN, June 16, 2026 (BSS) – Ruling BNP lawmakers today expressed their firm optimism about the execution of the proposed budget for 2026-2027 fiscal as the stipulated budget discussion continued in the House.
Most treasury bench lawmakers who took part in the discussion today ruled out speculations about the feasibility of the budget saying it would not be difficult to implement it to fulfill ordinary people’s expectations.
Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on June 11 unveiled a Taka 9.38trillion national budget for the upcoming fiscal setting the GDP growth target at 6.5 percent aiming to rebound from the provisional 4.14 percent growth recorded in the outgoing financial year.
State Minister for Textiles and Jute Md Shariful Alam said the proposed budget would be successfully implemented under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s leadership.
He recalled the successful implementation of budgets during past BNP governments led by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.
Alam, elected to parliament from a Kishorganj constituency, called the proposed budget “exemplary” as it waved different types of taxes and particularly duty on 61 essentials and advance income tax (AIT).
He expected the initiatives to strengthen the national economy and reduce common people’s living cost.
BNP lawmaker M Abu Sufian from Chattogram-9 said in no way the implementation of the budget would not be impossible as it proposed reduced operational cost and increased development expenditures.
Treasury bench lawmaker M Fakhrul Islam from Noakhali-5 noted that the proposed budget is the biggest one in Bangladesh history and expected it to bring positive impact on the economy.
BNP lawmaker from Natore-3 Anwarul Islam said the budget significantly raised allocations for education, health and agriculture which were vital sectors directly linked to the life of individuals.
The proposed budget has earmarked over Taka 1.36,000 crore for education sector, Taka 69,606 crore for health and Taka 28,000 crore for agriculture.
Ruling party lawmaker SM Jahangir Hossain from Dhaka-18 said in 1976-77, President Zia’s government had placed a budget of Taka 19,000 crore and in 1991 Begum Zia’s government placed a budget of Taka 15,584 crore to boost the economy of the country.
The incumbent government of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman placed the proposed budget for 2026-27 in line with the implementation record of these previous budgets.
Opposition Jamaat-e Islami lawmaker from Faridpur-1 Md Elias Molla said the allocation for the education sector is 2 percent of the GDP and Taka 49,000 crore more than the allocation earmarked in the previous budget.
Ruling party lawmaker Fahima Nasrin of women seat-29 called budget women friendlyas it allocated Taka 5,196 crore for the women and children affairs ministry.
She said the allocation would effectively promote women in the country.
Opposition lawmaker M Raihan Siraji from Ranpur-1, however, sharply criticized the proposed budget saying the overall size of the budget was not healthy at all as it was entirely dependent on tax.
Opposition lawmaker of Nilphamari-2 Al Faruque Abdul Latif expressed doubts about materialization of the revenue earning target of Taka 6,95,000 crore and asked the government to watch the previous revenue earning record carefully.
A number of women lawmakers today took part in the budget discussion.
They are: Zeeba Amina Khan from women seat-12, Nazrul Islam Azad from Narayanganj-2, Bilkis Islam from women seat-7,Nipun Roy Chowdhury from women seat-11, Anwarul Islam from Natore-3, Sunsila Jabrin from women seat-15, Suraia Jerin from women seat-25, Shamim Ara Begum Shawpna from women seat-21, Fahmida Huq from women seat-18, Sultana Ahmed from women seat-17, Momtaz Alo from women seat-28,Rezeka Sultana from women seat-36, Mansura Akter from women seat-26 and Sajeda Samad from women seat-42.
Treasury bench lawmaker M Mominul Huq from Chandpur-5, opposition lawmakers Abul Kawser M Nazrul Islam from Gaibandha-3, M Enamul Huq from Naogaon-2, M Abdus Sattar from Nilphamari-1, M Moktar Ali from Jashore-6, M Abul Hasan from Sylhet-5 and independent lawmaker AZM Rezwanul Huq from Dinajpur-5 took part in the budget discussion.
